Colombo, March 29: In response to Sri Lanka’s urgent call for help amid a fuel supply crisis, India has stepped in with immediate assistance. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed his gratitude for the Indian government’s swift action.
Dissanayake shared his sentiments on social media, revealing that he had recently spoken with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During their conversation, he highlighted the disruptions in fuel supply caused by conflicts in the Middle East.
Following this discussion, he noted, “India promptly extended its support, and I am thankful for that.” On Saturday, 38,000 metric tons of fuel arrived in Colombo.
The president also acknowledged the full cooperation of Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar during this crisis.
Former Minister and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa also took to social media to thank India. He remarked that India has consistently upheld its neighborly duty with great commitment.
Rajapaksa wrote that Prime Minister Modi and the people of India have once again demonstrated their “Neighborhood First” policy by delivering 38,000 metric tons of petroleum on time.
He stated, “India has always stood by Sri Lanka in times of crisis, providing essential supplies and economic assistance, reflecting the true essence of its Neighborhood First policy. As a region, it is crucial for countries to collaborate as strategic partners for mutual improvement.”
Additionally, Rajapaksa advised the government to consider models like India’s special additional excise duty. He mentioned that India reduced excise duties not to lower prices immediately but to stabilize the market and prevent further price hikes amid fluctuations in global oil prices.
