Vienna, April 4: The Iranian embassy in Austria has accused the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, of hypocrisy. This controversy arose following his comments regarding ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Borrell stated during a conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that restoring “toll-free navigation” in the Hormuz Strait should be an immediate priority. He attributed the near halt of shipping in the region to attacks from Iran.
In response, the Iranian embassy issued two posts criticizing Borrell’s statements. They claimed he was ignoring the “aggressive attacks from the US-Israel alliance,” while characterizing Iran’s actions as merely “defensive.”
The embassy also raised legal concerns, noting that Borrell appealed to Iran to respect the ‘UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,’ despite Iran not being a party to this treaty.
In a sharply worded statement, the embassy targeted Borrell’s advisors, labeling them as “yes-men.” They also referenced former US President Donald Trump, suggesting that similar figures surrounded him.
Furthermore, the embassy asserted that Iran has complied with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, yet its “peaceful and monitored nuclear facilities” have faced attacks.
Concluding their statement, the embassy emphasized, “International law should be equal for all, and respect must be given to everyone: Iranians, Palestinians, Lebanese, Syrians, Iraqis, Yemenis, and all oppressed people deserve respect. No one has the right to hypocritically use this for their benefit while crushing the legitimate demands of others.”
It is noteworthy that the Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime route for global oil supply, and the escalating tensions in the area have raised international concerns.
