India Emerges as a Global Diplomatic Leader on International Platforms

New Delhi, June 19: In the evolving global order, India is establishing itself as a central figure on international platforms. Today, India is at the forefront of discussions in various forums and summits. In recent years, India has positioned itself as a global agenda-setter and bridge-builder, significantly enhancing its diplomatic image worldwide.

Until about a decade ago, India was primarily viewed as an emerging economy on global platforms. However, today’s India is seen as a key player in setting agendas and acting as a bridge between developed and developing nations.

India has seized numerous opportunities on global platforms to demonstrate its capabilities. The presidency of the G-20 summit in 2023, its role in BRICS and SCO, and its leadership of the Global South have drawn significant attention to India’s diplomatic performance. Nations from the U.S. to Europe and the Middle East have recognized that underestimating today’s India could be a grave mistake.

During its G-20 presidency, India conveyed a message of unity to the world with the theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future.” Additionally, India facilitated the African Union’s entry as a permanent member. This move further established India as the voice of the Global South.

At the G-20 summit, India highlighted the concerns of developing nations on international platforms. Prior to the summit in New Delhi, India chaired the “Voice of Global South” summit, which included over 125 developing countries. Discussions at this summit focused on their concerns and expectations, which were subsequently integrated into the G-20’s main agenda.

India is actively participating in global forums like BRICS and SCO. Its stance on the expansion of BRICS has been clear and balanced. While India does not oppose the expansion, it insists on a transparent process. This approach aims to balance China’s growing influence. The BRICS summit also emphasized trade in local currencies and the creation of a multipolar world order.

In discussions about the Quad and the Indo-Pacific, India is strengthening cooperation with countries like the U.S., Japan, and Australia in areas such as maritime security, supply chains, technology, semiconductors, and Indo-Pacific strategies.

India’s role in the SCO is also balanced. It emphasizes counter-terrorism cooperation and access to Central Asia. India’s participation in both the Quad and SCO reflects its diplomatic acumen. Through the Quad, India seeks to counter China’s increasing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific. The SCO provides a platform for discussions on regional terrorism, drug trafficking, and issues related to Afghanistan with China and Pakistan.

When it comes to climate and energy diplomacy, India aims to be a solution-oriented nation, not just a participant in climate discussions, through initiatives like Mission Life, green energy transition, and renewable energy.

During global crises, India’s proactive stance has solidified its reputation as a reliable nation. Initiatives such as vaccine diplomacy during COVID-19, Operation Ganga, Operation Kaveri, and Operation Ajay, along with evacuation efforts during crises in West Asia, demonstrate India’s commitment to the safety and security of not only its citizens abroad but also foreign nationals. This has significantly enhanced India’s credibility on the world stage.
