India Co-Sponsors GCC-Led UNSC Proposal Emphasizing Safety of Indian Migrants

New Delhi, March 13: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday that India has co-sponsored a proposal led by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This proposal focuses on the welfare and safety of the large Indian diaspora in GCC countries.

During a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India has issued several statements regarding the ongoing conflicts in West Asia, emphasizing the need to prioritize the safety of all individuals.

Jaiswal remarked, “Yes, we have co-sponsored the GCC-led proposal in the UNSC. This proposal has been co-sponsored by 135 countries. It reflects our stance, as we have a significant expatriate population in GCC nations, and their welfare and safety are of utmost importance. The Gulf region is also crucial for our energy security.”

He further noted, “We issued statements on February 28 and March 3. Following this, the External Affairs Minister made a suo motu statement in Parliament addressing all issues. We have reiterated the need to prioritize the safety of all citizens and express our sorrow for the lost lives.”

Earlier on Thursday, GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohammed Albudaiwi welcomed the UNSC proposal, which condemned the treacherous Iranian military campaign against GCC countries and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Albudaiwi stated, “The adoption of this proposal by 136 countries reflects the complete consensus of the international community regarding the violations of sovereignty faced by GCC member states and Jordan due to Iranian aggression. This proposal also ensures the legal right to individual or collective self-defense under Article 51.”

He emphasized that this international condemnation, made possible by unprecedented global consensus, is clear evidence of Iran’s violations of international law and the UN Charter by targeting civilians, civilian structures, and infrastructure.

The GCC Secretary-General further highlighted that the Security Council’s proposal underscores strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence of GCC countries and Jordan. It also emphasizes the strategic importance of the Gulf region for global peace and security and its role in global economic stability.

Bahrain’s Permanent Representative Jamal Faris Alrowaihi stated that GCC countries have collectively intercepted over 954 Iranian missiles, 2,500 drones, and 17 aircraft, announcing plans to bring a proposal to the Security Council condemning Tehran.

He noted that attacks on the six-member GCC are disrupting trade and maritime routes, impacting both regional and international economies.

He added, “They have been targeting residential buildings, food distribution centers, airports, ports, energy facilities, and critical civilian infrastructure.”
