Washington, April 9: India and the United States have intensified discussions on trade, defense, and essential technology. During a three-day visit to the U.S., Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held several high-level meetings in Washington.
These discussions took place between the Pentagon and India’s Commerce Department. They also explored a new digital platform aimed at enhancing trade relations and reaching the general public.
Vikram Misri and India’s Ambassador to the U.S., Vinay Kwatra, jointly launched the India-U.S. Trade Facilitation Portal. The Indian Embassy in the U.S. described this initiative as a significant step toward unlocking the full potential of trade between the two nations.
The portal aims to support Mission 500, which has opened registration for exporters. Officials noted that this initiative seeks to simplify market access and deepen commercial linkages.
At the Pentagon, Misri engaged in discussions with Mike Duffy, the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment. The Indian Embassy stated, “Both sides discussed ways to deepen defense industry, technology, and supply chain linkages in line with the major goals outlined in last year’s bilateral Major Defense Partnership framework.”
He also met with Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby for in-depth discussions on recent activities in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia. This meeting followed his recent talks in New Delhi.
The defense-related discussions emphasized the growing focus on industrial cooperation, technology transfer, and supply chain integration between the two countries.
At the Commerce Department, Misri met with Deputy Secretary Jeffrey Kessler and William Kimmitt to enhance cooperation in commercial and essential technologies. The Embassy noted, “They also discussed building a strong and reliable supply chain.”
These meetings reflect a coordinated effort to align economic and strategic priorities, particularly in emerging technologies and secure supply chains.
Misri’s visit follows External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s trip to Washington in February, continuing the momentum of high-level dialogues between the two nations.
Additionally, military discussions have further accelerated this pace. Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh visited Peterson Space Force Base during his U.S. trip and engaged with General Gregory M. Guillot. The Indian Air Force described this as a beneficial exchange of perspectives on challenging operational methods.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this visit provides an opportunity to review the entire spectrum of India-U.S. bilateral relations and advance cooperation in key areas such as trade, defense, science, technology, and regional and global developments of mutual interest.
In recent years, India and the U.S. have enhanced cooperation under a comprehensive global strategic partnership, with defense, technology, and supply chains emerging as key pillars.
Bilateral trade has consistently increased, and both sides aim to further enhance it. Initiatives like the new trade portal are expected to assist exports and deepen economic integration.
