Meeting Between Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi Sparks Optimism for China-India Relations

Beijing, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : During the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi, a significant meeting took place between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Experts view this encounter as a crucial step towards enhancing bilateral relations. Professor B.R. Deepak, from the Centre for Chinese Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, shared insights with CGTN Hindi reporter Anil Pandey, offering a positive assessment of the leaders’ discussions.

According to Deepak, the meeting signals a potential shift from competition to controlled cooperation in India-China relations. With decreasing tensions along the border, both nations may see a reduction in strategic and economic risks. Furthermore, there is a promising opportunity for increased collaboration in trade, investment, manufacturing, electronics, energy, and supply chains.

Direct flight services are also being established, which could enhance connectivity and promote tourism, education, and business interactions. This strengthened relationship may lead to better coordination among developing countries within forums like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), amplifying their voices on the global stage.

For India, stable relations could bolster its strategic autonomy, while China stands to gain stability and economic opportunities in Asia. However, challenges such as unresolved border disputes and trade imbalances persist. Maintaining a balance with partners like the United States and Japan will be crucial for India moving forward. Overall, the meeting between these two major Asian powers ignites hope for a brighter future.

On September 12, during their meeting in New Delhi, Modi and Jinping emphasized the need for stable and long-term relations between India and China. They agreed on the importance of peace and stability along the border, seeking a just and mutually acceptable resolution to disputes, and avoiding turning differences into conflicts. The leaders also committed to viewing each other as partners rather than rivals, focusing on enhancing cooperation in trade, market access, investment, and supply chains. Additionally, they expressed intentions to strengthen direct flights, tourism, and humanitarian connections, as well as cooperation on multilateral platforms like BRICS, SCO, and the United Nations.

It can be said that BRICS is evolving into a significant platform, reflecting the growing power of the Global South. There is hope that member countries will set aside their differences and work with a long-term vision.
