India and Canada Discuss Strengthening Defense Cooperation

Singapore, May 30: India and Canada engaged in discussions on strengthening defense cooperation and exploring deeper collaboration in various sectors. The meeting took place during the Shangri-La Dialogue, where India’s Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh met with Calvin Brousseau, the Senior Assistant Deputy Minister of the Canadian Ministry of Defense.

The Ministry of Defense shared on social media that both sides discussed ways to enhance India-Canada defense cooperation, highlighting the growing alignment of strategic interests between the two nations.

Rajesh Kumar Singh also met Major General Michael Rosset of the Seychelles Defense Forces to discuss enhancing defense and maritime security cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

During the Shangri-La Dialogue, Singh held discussions with Admiral Giuseppe Cavò Draghi, Chair of the NATO Military Committee, focusing on strategic dialogue and addressing global security challenges. The Ministry stated that this conversation reaffirmed India’s commitment to constructive engagement with multilateral defense organizations.

Additionally, Singh spoke with Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, emphasizing the strengthening of military-to-military cooperation and addressing emerging security challenges, thereby confirming the shared commitment to deepen India-U.S. strategic defense relations.

At the Shangri-La Dialogue, Singh also engaged with think tanks and academics on enhancing the Indo-Pacific security framework, defense industrial cooperation, and emerging technological partnerships.

He addressed a special session on India’s defense diplomacy for a stable, secure, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, sharing India’s vision for regional security and strategic engagement. Dr. Shilpak Ambule, India’s High Commissioner in Singapore, also participated in the discussions.

On Thursday, Singh visited the Digital Operations Technology Center of the Singapore Armed Forces, gaining valuable insights into Singapore’s advanced digital and technical capabilities and exploring avenues for collaboration in specialized and emerging areas of warfare.

Singh co-chaired the 16th Defense Policy Dialogue with Joseph Leong, Singapore’s Permanent Secretary (Defense), focusing on defense cooperation and confirming the strong bilateral defense partnership between the two countries.

The discussions covered significant areas such as defense collaboration, security cooperation, and ways to further strengthen the strategic relationship between India and Singapore.
