India Aims for Asian Champions Trophy Final Against Korea in Mohali

The Indian mens hockey team faces Korea in the Asian Champions Trophy semifinals, seeking a spot in the final after a strong league performance.

Mohali, November 4 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian men’s hockey team is set to face Korea on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Asian Champions Trophy at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior Hockey Stadium in Mohali. This match marks the first international hockey event to be held at this venue. India is aiming to reach the final for the seventh time.

Based on their performance in the league stage, the Indian team is a strong contender for the title. They topped the standings by winning all five of their round-robin matches.

This match against Korea presents an opportunity for India to further assert its dominance over Asian rivals. Earlier, India defeated Korea 8-0 in Jalandhar and also secured an 8-2 victory at the Asian Games held in Japan.

Despite their impressive statistics and attacking prowess, India has identified an area for improvement before the knockout stage. Following a 13-0 victory over Bangladesh, the team showed signs of vulnerability in the second quarter of their last four matches. They occasionally lost control, allowing opponents to make a comeback. In their previous encounter against Korea in Jalandhar, India conceded six penalty corners. The second quarter also posed challenges against China, Malaysia, and Japan, where they allowed equalizing goals but managed to turn the matches around in the final two quarters.

Indian coach Craig Fulton expressed confidence in the team’s position after their win against Korea but acknowledged the unique pressure of knockout matches. “We need a strong start; that will be crucial,” he emphasized.

Over the past decade, Korea has found it increasingly difficult to defeat India. The two teams have faced off 26 times, with India winning 16 matches and seven ending in draws.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 7 PM.
