Canva Announces Layoffs Affecting 22% of Workforce to Streamline Operations

Canva plans to lay off 1,271 employees, nearly 22% of its workforce, as part of a major organizational restructuring.

New Delhi, November 4 (Daily Kiran) : Canva, the graphic design platform, has announced a significant organizational restructuring aimed at maintaining long-term growth and competitiveness. The company will lay off approximately 1,271 employees, which represents about 22% of its total workforce.

In a message to employees, CEO and co-founder Melanie Perkins described this decision as the toughest in the company’s 13-year history. After months of deliberation, the company decided to implement critical changes to its organizational structure, workplace arrangements, and the skills required for the future.

The layoffs will impact employees worldwide, with some roles being redefined, others shifted to centralized hubs, and many positions eliminated entirely. Canva stated that certain teams will be integrated, while others will be assigned broader responsibilities to reduce organizational complexity.

Perkins noted that for the first time in a decade, Canva’s growth rate has slowed. Rapid technological changes are shifting customer expectations and product development directions. She emphasized that minor adjustments are no longer sufficient; the company must re-establish itself based on smaller, more agile, and empowered teams.

As part of this restructuring, Canva will integrate its product, growth, and platform functions under a single product organization. The company will also reduce specialized roles and management layers while promoting direct collaboration in the office.

According to the company, Sydney will become a primary hub for more product teams in the future. Most hybrid employees will be required to work in the office two to three days a week starting in January.

To support affected employees, Canva has announced a comprehensive support package. This includes at least six months of salary, health insurance coverage where applicable, career transition assistance, expanded employee support services, and a $10,000 grant opportunity under the new Canva Collective Fund for eligible employees.

Perkins stated that these changes aim to ensure Canva remains competitive in the coming decade. However, she acknowledged that the impact on departing employees will be significant.

This move comes as the global tech industry undergoes a restructuring phase due to cost control measures, the increasing use of artificial intelligence, and changing business conditions. Canva’s decision is seen as part of a broader trend where companies are striving to enhance operational efficiency and adapt to future technological needs.
