New Delhi, June 22: India has reached a significant milestone in its organ donation campaign, recording over 500,000 pledges. This achievement reflects the growing awareness, compassion, and collective commitment of citizens towards life-saving acts such as organ and tissue donation.
This milestone underscores the recognition of organ donation as a noble act of humanity, offering hope and a second chance at life for patients awaiting transplants. It also marks notable progress in the Indian government’s ongoing efforts to promote voluntary organ and tissue donation, fostering a culture of informed participation and social responsibility.
On this occasion, Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), expressed gratitude for the tremendous support from citizens across the country for the cause of organ donation. He praised the invaluable contributions of government and non-government organizations, healthcare professionals, educational institutions, media organizations, and other partners who played a crucial role in raising awareness and garnering public support. He also acknowledged the continuous commitment and collaborative efforts of all state governments and union territories in achieving this milestone.
The Indian government remains steadfast in its commitment to bridging the gap between the demand and availability of organs and tissues by raising awareness, enhancing institutional capacities, and strengthening transplant systems. Efforts are focused on ensuring that organ transplant processes across the country remain ethical, equitable, transparent, and patient-centered.
In recent years, the organ donation campaign has gained momentum following inspiring appeals by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programs. On several occasions, Prime Minister Modi has highlighted the transformative impact of organ donation and urged citizens to actively support this noble cause, contributing to a broader national campaign aimed at saving and improving lives.
To facilitate this effort, the Aadhaar-based organ donation pledge registration portal has made the registration process more accessible, secure, and transparent. This platform has empowered citizens across the country to easily register their pledges, strengthening public participation and increasing trust in the organ donation ecosystem. This significant achievement is a crucial step towards meeting the rising demand for organs and tissues for transplantation and showcases the success of the government’s collaborative efforts.
