New Delhi, September 2: Congress leader Salman Soz has sharply criticized the Indian government regarding its reported GDP growth of 7.8%. He accused the government of celebrating on social media while ignoring the harsh realities of inflation, unemployment, and stagnant rural incomes.
In the first quarter of the financial year 2026-27, the government released figures showing a GDP growth of 7.8%. Soz remarked, “The government is celebrating this 7.8% growth on Instagram. They seem to think that those of us who are concerned about the state of the country are merely ‘mental naxals’ or something similar.”
He expressed that if there were no reasons for concern, they wouldn’t be speaking out. “The Prime Minister appears disconnected from ground realities. There are numerous issues in the country, including inflation, rising prices, unemployment, and a lack of private sector investment. Where will jobs come from? We also face challenges from AI and climate change, yet their attitude is to keep celebrating. People are struggling.”
Soz highlighted the plight of 8 crore children who are neither studying nor working, questioning the basis of the government’s celebrations. “If the economy is doing so well, why are investors pulling out money? Our country is vast,” he stated.
He further challenged the Prime Minister’s claims of a robust economy, pointing out that approximately ₹2.5 lakh crore has been withdrawn from the Indian stock market in 2026 alone. “If the economy is so strong, why is the export share so low compared to previous years? The growth figures being presented show a significant increase in exports, but the reality is different.”
Soz emphasized the lack of discussion on the impending challenges posed by artificial intelligence, stating, “We already have many problems, and they are likely to worsen.”
In a statement to the news agency, he remarked, “If the economy is genuinely strong, why hasn’t the income of our rural brothers and sisters increased over the past 10-12 years? Government data shows that real wages are nearly stagnant, indicating that the economy is not working for them.”
