Imtiaz Ali: From Aspiring Actor to Renowned Film Director

Mumbai, June 15: Film director Imtiaz Ali has gifted audiences with memorable films, featuring characters and dialogues that resonate deeply. Movies like “Jab We Met,” “Rockstar,” “Highway,” and “Tamasha” have established him as one of the most talked-about directors in the industry. However, few know that Imtiaz originally aspired to be an actor, not a director. He moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in acting, but fate had other plans for him.

Imtiaz Ali was born on June 16, 1971, in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. His father was an engineer in the irrigation department, while his mother was a homemaker. He spent part of his childhood in Patna, where he completed his early education before returning to Jamshedpur. His relatives owned several cinemas there, and a theater was located right next to his home, which fueled his passion for films.

To further his education, Imtiaz moved to Delhi and enrolled in Hindu College at Delhi University. During his college years, he actively participated in theater, writing, directing, and acting in plays. It was during this time that he decided to build a career in the entertainment industry.

After completing his studies, Imtiaz relocated to Mumbai with dreams of becoming an actor. He made several attempts to act and took on minor roles. Eventually, he began learning the intricacies of film production and direction. While working in the television industry, he directed shows like “Kurukshetra,” “Imtihan,” and “Mahabharat,” gaining valuable experience behind the camera.

Despite his aspirations to act, he did not completely abandon that dream. In 2004, he got the opportunity to play Yakub Memon in Anurag Kashyap’s acclaimed film “Black Friday.” However, he soon realized that his true strength lay not in acting but in crafting stories and bringing them to life on screen. This realization led him to focus entirely on direction.

His debut film, “Socha Na Tha,” was released in 2005. Although it received critical acclaim, it did not perform well at the box office. Following that, “Ahista Ahista” also failed to meet expectations. Despite two consecutive setbacks, Imtiaz did not lose hope. In 2007, “Jab We Met” was released, transforming his life. Starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, the film became a massive hit, catapulting Imtiaz to fame as a director.

Since then, he has directed several popular films, including “Love Aaj Kal,” “Rockstar,” “Highway,” “Tamasha,” and “Amar Singh Chamkila.” For his outstanding work, Imtiaz Ali has received numerous accolades, including IIFA, Guild Awards, Indian Telly Awards, and Zee Cine Awards.
