Saharanpur: Congress MP Imran Masood has strongly criticised the decision by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) to restrict entry of non-Hindus into these revered shrines. He described the move as driven by an agenda of hatred.
Speaking from Saharanpur, Imran Masood said, “Earlier, non-Hindus generally did not visit these places. Muslims, for instance, did not go to Gangotri Dham. These are sacred religious sites for Hindus, and only they used to visit. Now, it has come to a point where one has to prove their Hindu identity before entering. Even Shankaracharya will have to prove he is Shankaracharya. Voters have to prove they are voters. Everything has been turned into a spectacle.”
TrendingHe further added that the public discourse has shifted away from crucial issues like employment and the economy. “This is the limit now,” he said. Masood alleged that the current government has been involved in demolishing centuries-old temples, mosques and dargahs, quoting Shankaracharya’s statement that 150 temples have been destroyed.
On the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new rules, the Congress MP expressed concerns that caste-based conflicts might intensify. “Their politics thrives on such disputes. The provisions of the SC-ST Act were introduced by Congress, but these people only spread hatred. How many vice-chancellors are from Scheduled Castes? How many Dalit vice-chancellors are there?” he questioned.
Regarding the resignation of the Bareilly City Magistrate over the alleged insult to Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand, Masood stated, “There is no doubt that Shankaracharya was insulted.”
It is noteworthy that the Bareilly City Magistrate submitted his resignation to the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, citing reasons related to self-respect, conscience, and accountability towards society rather than personal or professional issues. The resignation letter also referred to Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand.
