New Delhi, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : IIT Bombay has officially dismissed reports claiming that Director Shirish B. Kedare resigned following the suicide of a student. The institution labeled these reports as false. Videos circulating on social media suggested that Kedare had stepped down, but the university clarified that he remains in his position.
In a post on the social media platform X, IIT Bombay stated, “The director has not resigned. We categorically state that the news related to this is false.” The university also issued an apology for its previous statements regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of the student, Sahil Wakode.
The institution acknowledged the need for a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing that it was inappropriate to comment on the events leading up to Sahil’s death until the proper inquiry was complete. They expressed regret for any confusion caused by earlier communications.
In response to the situation, the director announced the immediate suspension of Professor Dula from his role as dean. He assured that further actions would be determined following the investigation.
Following the tragic incident on campus, students have been protesting and raised various issues, including a demand for Kedare’s resignation. Although a special meeting of the Board of Governors was convened to address these concerns, it remains unclear whether the director will step down.
The protests erupted after the second-year B.Tech student was caught cheating during an examination last Friday. The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation into Wakode’s suicide, examining his mobile phone for any potential suicide note or digital evidence, as no note was found in his hostel room.
Investigators are conducting a technical analysis of the seized devices and inspecting the site of the incident in Hostel Number 4 to gather evidence related to the events of September 18.
Previously, the IIT Bombay Faculty Forum expressed deep sorrow over Wakode’s death and extended support to Professor Dula, who was involved in the examination process as the course instructor and invigilator. The forum conveyed condolences to the family during this challenging time.
