IIM Indore to Study Young Cricket Prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Indore, June 3: IIM Indore is set to conduct a study on Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 15-year-old cricket sensation who scored 776 runs in 16 matches during IPL 2026. Director Himanshu Rai emphasized the importance of nurturing such exceptional talents to prevent them from losing their way.

In an exclusive interview, Rai stated, “We have observed remarkable and unique talents in many children at a very young age. Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s achievements at just 15 years old, both nationally and internationally, are extraordinary. Our study will explore the factors contributing to his exceptional abilities.”

Rai explained that psychology and social sciences suggest three key determinants: personality, which is genetic; the surrounding environment, including family support, lifestyle, and training; and individual initiative. He noted that performance depends on capability, opportunity, and dynamism.

He further elaborated, “Capability refers to inherent potential, while motivation indicates whether the child is self-driven. We aim to understand how these qualities mix in young prodigies.”

Rai also highlighted that many extraordinary talents have faded over time due to familial and societal pressures, as well as economic challenges. Emotional, spiritual, and mental imbalances can arise under stress, affecting how these young talents cope with obstacles.

“Our goal is to identify the challenges faced by such gifted children. We want to ensure that young prodigies like Vaibhav can sustain their performance over time,” he added.

The study will commence in two weeks, with Rai leading the research team personally. He plans to assemble a team of around five members, including experts in human resources, human development, psychology, and sociology. A draft report is expected within three months.

When asked about the benefits of studying Suryavanshi for youth, Rai responded, “Vaibhav serves as an example. Understanding children with exceptional abilities in various fields—such as chess, shooting, mathematics, physics, art, and music—will help us identify what they need to maintain their talents long-term. Many gifted children worldwide have lost their way, and we aim to prevent that in the future.”
