Humayun Kabir Appeals to Calcutta High Court Against Post-Election Violence in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 7: Humayun Kabir, the president of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, approached the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, seeking intervention to stop post-election violence in West Bengal.

Kabir alleged that following the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly election results on May 4, there has been widespread politically motivated and orchestrated violence in Murshidabad district.

In his petition filed with the court, he claimed that the homes of his party’s workers were vandalized and that they were physically assaulted. He has requested immediate action from the bench headed by Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen.

The petition demands a fair investigation, protection for party workers, and the maintenance of peace and order in the region.

Kabir’s lawyer noted that during the first phase of the elections on April 23, Kabir himself was attacked by anti-social elements, resulting in damage to his vehicle. Additionally, his party workers faced harassment, yet the police did not register any complaints regarding these incidents.

He emphasized that due to administrative failures, they are seeking the court’s intervention to ensure immediate peace and order and to conduct a fair investigation.

It is noteworthy that the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were declared on May 4, where Humayun Kabir won two seats in Murshidabad district.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gained power in West Bengal, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule. The BJP secured a total of 207 seats, while the Trinamool Congress managed to win 80 seats.

Following the announcement of the results, incidents of violence have been reported in various areas of the state, including South 24 Parganas, with allegations of attacks on Trinamool Congress workers and vandalism of party offices.

The police have stated that strict action will be taken against those involved in such activities.
