Islamabad, May 17: Human rights organizations in Pakistan, particularly the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), have expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The commission highlighted that residents in these regions are caught in a cycle of enforced disappearances, targeted killings, and militant attacks.
In a statement released on X, the HRCP noted, “The alleged abduction of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and two other staff members of Gwadar University while traveling from Gwadar to Quetta raises serious questions about the state’s security framework.”
The commission questioned why the government has failed to ensure the safety of major highways and citizens.
Additionally, the HRCP expressed concern over the murder of educator Ghamkhar Hayat Nushki. They stated that the abduction or killing of teachers and intellectuals does not merely represent individual tragedies but has far-reaching effects on society and the education system as a whole.
The statement further mentioned, “Recent deadly attacks in Bannu, Bajaur, and Lakki Marwat reflect the escalating threat of militant violence. These incidents, including a bomb blast in a crowded market in Sarae Naurang, have resulted in the loss of lives of civilians, police officers, and security personnel.”
The HRCP urged the government to go beyond mere condemnation and take concrete steps to ensure the safety of citizens and public spaces. The commission emphasized the need for the safe recovery of abducted university officials, impartial investigations into all attacks, and accountability for the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the Baloch National Movement’s Human Rights Department claimed that renowned poet, writer, and educator Ghamkhar Hayat was shot dead by individuals linked to Pakistan-supported death squads in the Kili Mengal area of Nushki district.
Naseem Baloch stated that Hayat’s murder is not an isolated incident but part of the ongoing “Baloch genocide” and systemic repression in Balochistan. He accused the authorities of attempting to undermine the intellectual and cultural foundations of the Baloch nation by targeting intellectuals and aware voices.
