Udaipur, Aug 12, 2025 (H.S.) – Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), India’s only and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has become the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), marking a significant milestone that firmly places India on the global map of Responsible Mining.

ICMM is a leadership body comprising 25 of the world’s leading mining and metals companies, committed to promoting sustainable development, transparency, and ethical practices in the industry. Hindustan Zinc’s membership follows a rigorous independent review and approval by the ICMM Council, which includes the CEOs of member companies. This is ICMM’s first new member since 2021, reflecting its growing engagement in South Asia.

Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, said, “Joining the International Council on Mining and Metals is a proud achievement for Hindustan Zinc and India. It brings our nation’s mining industry onto the global stage while strengthening our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and responsible resource development. It is an opportunity to play a leading role in the global energy transition.”
As part of this membership, Hindustan Zinc will join an exclusive group of global industry leaders supporting the future of responsible and sustainable mining. The company will adhere to ICMM’s 40 Performance Expectations covering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, which include third-party assurance and apply to all company assets.
Arun Misra, CEO and Whole-Time Director of Hindustan Zinc, said, “Becoming the first Indian company to join ICMM is both an honour and a great responsibility. This milestone marks a new chapter in our Sustainability 2.0 journey, grounded in transparency, innovation, and global best practices. For us, sustainability and good business go hand in hand – it is a strategic imperative to create lasting positive impact on our environment, communities, and the wider industry.”
ICMM President and CEO Rohitesh Dhawan welcomed the move, saying, “We are delighted to have Hindustan Zinc as our first Indian member. This not only strengthens our collective efforts but also reinforces Hindustan Zinc’s leadership in India’s mining industry. It is a significant step forward for ICMM – our first new member since Boliden joined in 2021 – and an important milestone in expanding our presence in this region.”
Headquartered in Udaipur, Hindustan Zinc operates silver-lead-zinc underground mines, smelters, and supporting infrastructure in northwest India. As a publicly listed entity, it upholds independent governance, sustainability reporting, and disclosure practices. The company has been recognised for leadership in tailings management, decarbonisation, circular economy, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
In 2024, Hindustan Zinc was ranked the world’s most sustainable company in the metals and mining sector for the second consecutive year by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment. It has adopted ambitious 2030 sustainability goals targeting climate action, biodiversity, water stewardship, circularity, and inclusive growth, with a commitment to achieving net zero by or before 2050. Notably, it was the first Indian metals and mining company to have its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) goals validated for the 1.5°C global warming limit. In FY25, the company reduced its greenhouse gas emission intensity by 15% from the 2020 baseline while increasing production.
Hindustan Zinc’s membership in ICMM further cements its role as a global benchmark for responsible mining and amplifies India’s voice in shaping the future of ethical resource development.
