Thiruvananthapuram, August 7: Heavy rainfall has been ongoing in Kerala since Friday morning. In response, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for seven districts, warning of strong winds and adverse sea conditions.
The IMD has placed a three-hour Red Alert for Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. The alert indicates the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, along with winds reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h.
An Orange Alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, where moderate to heavy rainfall and winds of up to 50 km/h are expected over the next three hours.
For the remaining districts, the weather department predicts light to moderate rainfall with winds at speeds of 40 km/h. This latest warning follows the IMD’s earlier forecast of widespread rainfall across the state on Friday.
An Orange Alert is in effect for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, while a Yellow Alert applies to all other districts.
The weather department suggests that this spell of rain may continue until Saturday, with gradual improvement expected from Sunday.
The IMD has also warned of ‘Kallakkadal’ (high waves in the sea), indicating that elevated waves could occur along Kerala’s coast during the day.
Fishermen have been advised to avoid dangerous sea areas, and residents in coastal regions are urged to remain alert and follow local authorities’ instructions.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation due to the active southwest monsoon and the continuous rainfall in several districts over the past few days.
Disaster management agencies and district administrations have been put on high alert as heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding conditions are anticipated throughout the day.
