Bhubaneswar, July 15: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across most parts of Odisha as the annual Rath Yatra begins on Thursday.
Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD Bhubaneswar, informed the media on Wednesday that a low-pressure area over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and adjacent regions is likely to cause significant rainfall in the state. She noted that this weather system could strengthen further and move northward.
According to Mohanty, the weather system may intensify within the next 24 hours, leading to widespread rainfall across the state for the next three to four days.
On July 15, several districts may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with the possibility of extremely heavy rain in some areas. The IMD predicts that rainfall will continue on July 16 and 17, with heavy to very heavy rain expected in certain locations. The intensity of the rain is anticipated to gradually decrease after July 18, but light to moderate rainfall may persist in several districts until July 19.
The weather department has issued a red alert for Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts until 8:30 AM on July 16. The department warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, with the potential for extremely heavy rain in one or two locations.
Mohanty stated that heavy, very heavy, and extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue in Puri. She mentioned that the coastal city could experience ongoing heavy rainfall on Thursday.
The IMD has also cautioned that sea conditions along the Odisha coast may remain rough to very rough between July 15 and 17. Winds could reach speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially hitting 60 kilometers per hour.
Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea during this period. Residents in districts expecting heavy rainfall are urged to remain vigilant and follow guidelines issued by local authorities.
