Heavy Rain

Mumbai, 19 August (Kiran News). Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days in Mumbai and several other districts of Maharashtra has severely disrupted daily life, resulting in the death of 12 people in various incidents. Hundreds of houses have collapsed, and crops over 5 lakh acres have been destroyed. Flooding in Mumbai’s Mithi River has submerged many areas, and waterlogging on railway tracks has brought Mumbai’s lifeline—local train services—to a halt. Road traffic has also been affected, and low visibility has disrupted air services.

State Emergency Department Minister Girish Mahajan said that he held a meeting with officials on Tuesday and ordered an assessment of the damage caused by the rains. He stated that rainfall has had a widespread impact on daily life in the state. So far, 12 people and hundreds of animals have died in rain-related incidents. Both local trains and road transport systems have been severely affected, with buses stranded at various places and air services experiencing delays. NDRF and district administration teams have been deployed to move people living near the Mithi River in Mumbai to safer locations.

Minister Girish Mahajan also mentioned that water levels in rivers have risen in Nanded, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Satara, Raigad, and other districts. In these areas, district administration and NDRF teams are active on the ground.

Since this morning, Mumbai has been experiencing heavy rainfall. Along with this, high tides in the sea have prevented city water from draining out, causing the Mithi River to cross the danger mark. In areas like Kurla, Powai, and Bandra-Kurla Complex, water has reached up to the first floor of buildings. Kranti Nagar is completely surrounded by the floodwaters of the Mithi River. Here, NDRF and district administration teams have shifted 225 people to safe locations, and relief and rescue operations are ongoing at a fast pace.

Heavy rain has also flooded the Andheri, Milan, and Malad subways, forcing their closure. In Palghar district’s Vasai area, 145 families have been trapped by floodwaters in Mithagar, while large-scale waterlogging has occurred around hundreds of buildings in Nalasopara and Virar. Similarly, waterlogging in Mumbra, Bhiwandi, and Mira-Bhayandar areas of Thane district has created major difficulties for residents.
