Kolkata, July 15: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall in Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal over the next four days. This adverse weather may disrupt the Jagannath Rath Yatra scheduled for Thursday.
An official from the regional meteorological center in Alipore stated that moderate to heavy rain is likely in Kolkata and surrounding districts. Changes in weather patterns are expected starting Sunday.
The IMD issued a yellow alert on Wednesday, indicating the possibility of thunderstorms and rain across all districts in South Bengal, including Kolkata. Winds may reach speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour in some areas.
Heavy rain with strong winds is anticipated in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Jhargram districts on Wednesday. Other districts in South Bengal are expected to experience moderate rainfall.
On the day of the Jagannath Rath Yatra, heavy rain is forecasted for Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, and West Bardhaman districts.
An orange alert has been issued for South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore, while other districts are also likely to see thunderstorms and rain. The weather is expected to remain similar on Friday and Saturday, raising concerns about the impact on the Rath Yatra celebrations.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is also predicted for Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts on Wednesday, with a yellow alert issued for all other districts in North Bengal. The IMD does not expect significant weather changes on Thursday and Friday, but another round of rain may begin on Sunday, particularly affecting Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar districts. The intensity of rain may increase on Monday.
