Improper dietary choices can elevate body temperature, heightening the risk of dehydration, heat stroke, and digestive issues. Health experts recommend consuming light, easily digestible foods that do not contribute to additional heat. In contrast, heavy and oily meals require more energy for digestion, a process known as metabolic heat production. Foods like burgers, pizzas, and fried items can slow down digestion, increasing internal heat and leading to fatigue.
Spicy foods also affect body temperature. Compounds in chili and hot spices can accelerate metabolism, raising internal heat and increasing dehydration risks. Heavy protein meals demand more energy for digestion, generating additional heat, which can make one feel more exhausted in hot weather. Therefore, experts suggest opting for lighter protein sources during this season.
When it comes to beverages, cold drinks and sodas may provide immediate relief, but their sugar content can disrupt the body’s electrolyte balance. High sugar levels can reduce the body’s ability to retain water, gradually leading to dehydration. Similarly, caffeine in tea, coffee, and energy drinks can quickly deplete the body’s water levels, exacerbating weakness and fatigue in the heat.
Packaged snacks high in salt, such as chips and namkeen, can also be harmful. Excess sodium draws water from the body’s cells, disrupting fluid balance, which is particularly dangerous during hot weather when water levels are already low.
Additionally, consuming stale or improperly stored food can lead to infections, as bacteria thrive in warm conditions, increasing the risk of food poisoning and other infections. Extremely cold items or ice-cold water can cause sudden temperature changes in the body, negatively impacting digestion.
To mitigate these risks, light, fresh, and hydrating foods are recommended. Coconut water, buttermilk, lassi, sattu, and seasonal fruits help keep the body cool. Staying adequately hydrated is crucial for protecting against heat stroke.
