Ambala, May 21: A worrying surge in jaundice cases has been reported in the Tophkhana area of Ambala, Haryana, prompting health officials to take immediate action. The situation escalated following the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl named Mannat, with approximately 20 individuals now affected by the illness.
Local residents have expressed concerns over the supply of contaminated water, which they believe is the root cause of the ongoing health crisis. In response, a health department team has collected water samples from the area and initiated health camps to screen the affected population. Residents are being advised to use clean water and exercise caution.
Dr. Sunil Hari from the Ambala health department stated that the department is on high alert. Ongoing health screenings are being conducted, and water samples are being taken from various locations. He urged the community to ensure that water is used safely and to only use ice from reliable sources for cooling purposes. All Community Health Centers (CHCs) and Primary Health Centers (PHCs) have been instructed to collect water samples if five or more jaundice cases are reported in any area.
Health camps are being organized to conduct blood tests, X-rays, and provide necessary medications. The health department is collaborating with other agencies to ensure the availability of safe drinking water. So far, 20 cases have been confirmed in the area.
Former councilor Rajkumar highlighted the alarming increase in jaundice cases, particularly following the recent death of the young girl. The rising number of cases has prompted the administration to respond swiftly, with all departments actively engaged in addressing the crisis.
He has taken steps to raise awareness among residents, emphasizing the importance of the health camp where blood tests are being conducted. Chlorine is also being added to the water supply, and residents are urged to boil and filter their drinking water thoroughly.
Local resident Jagjeet Kaur shared her concerns about the persistent water quality issues, noting that dirty and discolored water has been a problem for some time. Although the situation has improved slightly in recent days due to administrative efforts, the issue remains unresolved. She mentioned that her 11-year-old child has experienced health problems, and the recent death of a neighboring child has heightened fears in the community. The health department team continues to monitor the situation closely.
