Beijing, April 3: The customs department in Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province in southern China, reported a remarkable surge in duty-free shopping during the first quarter of this year (January to March). The total value of duty-free purchases reached 14.21 billion yuan, with 1.816 million buyers acquiring 10.977 million items.
These figures represent increases of 25.7%, 18%, and 12%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. With the arrival of spring and a rise in travel activities, Hainan’s duty-free market is flourishing, leading to a consistent uptick in consumer engagement.
An official from the Haikou International Duty-Free City operation department noted a steady increase in customer numbers over the first three months, particularly among families and tourists traveling with children. Notably, sales of skincare products, snacks, and light luxury clothing have seen significant growth.
The Haikou customs department has activated its security mechanisms and streamlined monitoring processes. Special channels have been established to facilitate pre-registration for customs clearance, ensuring “immediate arrival, immediate inspection, and immediate release” of duty-free goods, which has kept the supply of items flowing smoothly in the market.
Officials stated that the Haikou customs department will continue to enhance monitoring, management, and services to promote the high-quality development of the offshore duty-free industry and actively contribute to the establishment of Hainan as a free trade port.
