Washington, May 24: Reports from American media indicate that the U.S. Secret Service evacuated the North Lawn of the White House on Saturday evening after gunfire was allegedly heard nearby.
Journalists present in the area were swiftly directed to the White House press briefing room as security personnel worked to secure the vicinity.
Following the incident, the streets surrounding the White House were filled with police officers and personnel from various law enforcement agencies.
According to a statement from the U.S. Secret Service, the shooting occurred shortly after 6 PM (ET) at the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, just outside the White House complex.
Officials reported that an individual approached a security checkpoint, drew a weapon from their bag, and began firing at the officers on duty.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal agents are assisting with the rescue and investigation efforts. In a post on X, he stated that an FBI team is on-site and aiding the Secret Service following the shooting incident near the White House.
