Kolkata, May 24: Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee appeared at the Gariahhat police station on Saturday for questioning. She, along with actor Parambrata Chatterjee, has been accused of inciting violence through social media posts following the 2021 elections.
Recently, an FIR was filed against both actors at the Gariahhat police station. The complainant, lawyer Joydeep Sen, has called for a swift investigation into their actions.
Following the complaint, police registered the FIR and summoned the actress, instructing her to appear before investigators within seven days. Swastika Mukherjee arrived at the police station on Saturday afternoon.
After nearly an hour of questioning regarding Parambrata’s alleged social media support, she left the police station without speaking to the journalists waiting outside.
Notably, Joydeep Sen had previously filed a complaint regarding a post made by Parambrata on Twitter (now known as X). According to the complainant, after the assembly election results were announced, Parambrata made inflammatory political comments on social media. Swastika reportedly supported and commented on that post.
Sen claims that on May 2, 2021, when the Trinamool Congress crossed the majority mark in the West Bengal assembly elections, Parambrata declared on social media that it should be “declared a day of beatings.”
In response to this post, actress Swastika allegedly commented, “Hahaha, let it be!”
The complainant argues that such comments have fueled political violence. He further alleges that the posts and comments made by the actors constitute offenses under Section 107 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The complaint also references several incidents during that time, including attacks, murders, rapes, arson, and physical assaults on BJP workers across various districts of West Bengal. It specifically mentions the murder of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar from Beliaghata, Kolkata.
