Gulmarg Records Minus 8.8°C, Cold Wave Intensifies in J&K

Srinagar, January 5: The cold wave has intensified in Jammu and Kashmir, with the Gulmarg ski resort recording a minimum temperature of minus 8.8 degrees Celsius on Monday. Srinagar also experienced a cold night, with the minimum temperature dropping to minus 3.6 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department reported that Gulmarg’s temperature of minus 8.8 degrees Celsius was the coldest night of the season so far. Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius.

In Jammu city, the lowest temperature at night was 8.7 degrees Celsius, while Katra recorded 5.6 degrees, Batote 2.1 degrees, Banihal minus 1.3 degrees, and Bhaderwah minus 2.1 degrees Celsius.

Although fresh snowfall was reported in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, the valley has not yet seen heavy snowfall this season.

The weather department has forecast mainly dry weather until January 20. This reduces the chances of significant snowfall during the ongoing 40-day Chilla-i-Kalan period.

If the Chilla-i-Kalan passes without heavy snowfall, water levels in rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, and wells across Jammu and Kashmir are expected to drop considerably during the summer months.

These water bodies depend on perennial mountain water reserves, which are replenished by heavy snowfall during Chilla-i-Kalan. Snowfall in February and March usually melts quickly due to rising temperatures.

Farmers, horticulturists, and others involved in agriculture have expressed concern over the lack of substantial snowfall so far in the valley.

The plains areas including Srinagar city have yet to see the season’s first snowfall. Due to the cold and dry weather, doctors have advised people, especially those with heart and lung conditions, to take precautions. Vulnerable individuals are recommended to avoid going outdoors until warmer weather returns.

A weak western disturbance affected the Union Territory a few days ago, bringing snowfall to higher reaches of Kashmir and light rain to the plains.
