Gujarat to Host Statewide Millet Festival on March 21-22

Ahmedabad, March 19: The Gujarat BJP spokesperson and Agriculture Minister, Jitu Vaghani, announced on Wednesday that a statewide ‘Millet Festival and Natural Farming Market’ will take place in 16 municipal corporations on March 21 and 22. The main event will be held at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad.

This two-day festival, organized by the Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation under the state’s agriculture department, will simultaneously occur in cities including Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Gandhinagar, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Navsari, Vapi, Nadiad, Mehsana, Surendranagar, Morbi, Porbandar, and Gandhidham.

Various dignitaries, including ministers, are expected to attend the events across different cities. Vaghani provided detailed information following discussions in the state cabinet, stating that the festival is themed ‘Earth’s Gold – Embrace Millets for a Healthy Life.’ This initiative aims to promote millets in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Shri Ann’ campaign.

At the Sabarmati Riverfront, approximately 85 stalls will be set up, while a total of 620 stalls will be established in other cities. These stalls will be allocated free of charge to farmers’ groups, farmer producer organizations, and individual farmers.

The initiative aims to empower farmers to sell millet products directly to consumers, reducing the role of intermediaries and ensuring better prices. Vaghani mentioned that the festival will feature exhibitions of millets, a food festival, agricultural technology showcases, and stalls for agricultural startups and women entrepreneurs.

Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase millet-based products and taste fresh dishes made from millets. He emphasized that millets and natural farming complement each other, as millet crops require less water and can be grown without chemical fertilizers, making them suitable for cow-based farming.

He further noted that under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s leadership, the state government is striving to promote natural farming and enhance farmers’ incomes through such initiatives.
