Shillong, March 19: Authorities in Meghalaya have extended the night curfew in the West Garo Hills district for an additional day due to rising tensions following recent violence. This information was confirmed by officials on Wednesday.
According to an order issued by the district magistrate and deputy commissioner, the curfew will be in effect from 6 PM on March 19 until 6 AM on March 20.
To facilitate essential and regular activities, a 12-hour relaxation period has been granted from 6 AM to 6 PM. During this time, schools, colleges, government and private offices, banks, and other establishments will remain open. However, officials have stated that strict monitoring will be in place to prevent any untoward incidents.
The curfew was first imposed on March 17 under Section 163 of the Indian Citizen Security Code due to a deterioration of public order following violent incidents in some areas of the district.
The unrest reportedly stemmed from protests against a notification that barred non-tribal individuals from participating in the tribal council election process. These protests escalated into violent clashes in Tura and surrounding areas, leading to vandalism and property damage.
Authorities have confirmed that at least two people have died as a result of the violence. In response, security has been heightened in West Garo Hills, with additional police and paramilitary forces deployed to sensitive locations.
Several individuals have been detained in connection with the clashes, and monitoring has been intensified to prevent further unrest.
In addition to the curfew, a prohibition order is in effect, banning public gatherings, rallies, and processions without prior permission. The administration has imposed restrictions on gatherings of five or more individuals, the use of loudspeakers without authorization, and the carrying of weapons or any items that could incite violence.
Officials have warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators. They emphasized that these restrictions are based on intelligence reports and are necessary to restore normalcy and maintain peace in the district.
