New Delhi, August 15: The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Saturday that the inaugural ‘Surya Path Tiranga Global Relay’ successfully concluded its journey across 54 countries and multiple time zones, reaching from Fiji in the east to the United States in the west. This event marked the 80th Independence Day of India.
The ‘Surya Path Tiranga’ initiative was organized under the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.
The Ministry stated, “Starting from the Indian High Commission in Fiji, this relay promoted the spirit of the tricolor from one sunrise to the next. It united the Indian community and friends of India worldwide. The relay concluded with a flag hoisting ceremony at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco.”
The relay also celebrated the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram‘, commemorating its lasting legacy as a symbol of India’s national spirit and pride. The event witnessed significant participation and enthusiasm from the Indian diaspora, reflecting their deep emotional connection to the tricolor.
In several countries, Indian missions hoisted the flag at sunrise, passing the responsibility of the relay to the next nation via posts on social media.
The Indian High Commission in Fiji announced on social media, “With the first rays of the sun, the Indian flag was hoisted in Suva, Fiji. This marked the beginning of the global tricolor relay ‘Surya Path Tiranga’, a symbolic journey spreading the essence of India’s Independence Day worldwide.”
In Spain, the Indian Embassy raised the tricolor and, while handing over the relay to Morocco, stated, “At sunrise, we hoisted the flag from our shores. Now it is the turn of the Indian Embassy in Morocco to carry forward this historic journey of Surya Path Tiranga. Let’s inspire Indians to spread the enthusiasm of ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ from one sunrise to the next.”
Following the flag hoisting in Morocco, the journey was passed to the Indian Embassy in Iceland. The relay then traveled through Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Dominican Republic.
The Indian Embassy in the Dominican Republic handed over the relay to the Indian Consulate in New York. The journey continued to Colombia, Ottawa, Kingston (Jamaica), Washington D.C., Lima (Peru), Toronto, Mexico, and finally concluded in San Francisco.
The Indian Consulate in San Francisco stated on social media, “With the proud hoisting of the tricolor at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco, the Surya Path Tiranga reaches an inspiring conclusion. Following the rising sun from east to west, this global relay, organized under ‘Har Ghar Tiranga 2026’, united Indian missions in a collective celebration of 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, our shared heritage, and our enduring national pride.”
Additionally, several Indian embassies awarded certificates to top scorers of the ‘Know India Quiz’, a special edition organized by the Ministry of External Affairs for Independence Day.
