Jamshedpur, March 3: N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, has expressed concern over the ongoing conflict between the U.S.-Israel and Iran. He stated that if the war in Iran continues for an extended period, it could impact global trade and supply chains.
Chandrasekaran was in Jamshedpur to commemorate the 187th birth anniversary of Tata Group founder Jamsetji Tata. During the main ceremony held at the Tata Steel campus, he paid tribute to the founder and extended greetings to the local community on Founder’s Day.
In a media interaction, he mentioned that the Tata Group imports raw materials, including limestone, from the Middle East. Given the group’s extensive global operations, any prolonged conflict could affect supply chains, delivery of goods, logistics, and sustainability. However, he clarified that, at present, the conflict has not directly impacted Tata Group or India.
He also emphasized that Tata Group employees are engaged in manufacturing, services, hospitality, and other sectors worldwide. Therefore, the safety of all employees and their families remains the group’s top priority, and the company is taking necessary precautions in this regard.
Regarding employment, he noted that job opportunities are continuously increasing due to the establishment of new units and expansion plans. Over the past five to six years, the number of employees in the group has grown from approximately 700,000 to 1.1 million, with a target to reach 1.5 million in the next five to six years. Additionally, efforts are underway to increase the participation of female employees to 28-30 percent.
Discussing the IT sector, he acknowledged that the arrival of new technologies raises concerns about employment. However, he believes that artificial intelligence will create new opportunities in sectors such as steel, automobiles, and finance, benefiting Tata Consultancy Services as well.
The event was attended by several senior officials, including T.V. Narendran, CEO of Tata Steel.
