New Delhi, March 9: India secured a remarkable victory against New Zealand by 96 runs in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. With this win, Team India has become the T20 World Cup champions for the third time in history.
The success of the Indian team can be attributed not only to the players but also to head coach Gautam Gambhir. Under his guidance, India has clinched two ICC tournaments within a year. Interestingly, New Zealand has been the opponent in both tournaments, led by captain Mitchell Santner.
On March 9, 2025, India won the Champions Trophy against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, chasing down a target of 252 runs with four wickets in hand. In that match, New Zealand scored 251 runs, losing seven wickets, with Santner at the helm.
Almost a year later, India batted first at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, scoring 255 runs while losing five wickets. In response, New Zealand was bowled out for just 159 runs in 19 overs.
Notably, Gautam Gambhir played a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2007, scoring 75 runs against Pakistan to secure a narrow five-run win. He also contributed significantly in the 2011 ODI World Cup final, scoring 97 runs to help India defeat Sri Lanka by six wickets.
Recently, Gambhir has proven himself as an effective coach through his strategic decisions. He has placed trust in young players and inspired the team to play aggressive and balanced cricket. Under his mentorship, the team’s performance has shown consistent improvement.
After winning two World Cup titles as a player, Gambhir played a key role in leading the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL championships in 2012 and 2014 as captain. Later, as a mentor, he guided the Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, and KKR became champions in 2024 under his mentorship.
In 2024, Gambhir was appointed head coach of the national team. Although he faced challenges initially, he has since established himself as a skilled strategist, leading India to two ICC events within a year. He is the only coach to have secured two ICC trophies for India.
