Former US Official Resigns Over Iran Policy, Faces FBI Scrutiny

Washington, March 19: Internal disagreements regarding the United States’ Iran policy have come to light. Former intelligence officer Joe Kent resigned, questioning the government’s strategy and stating that the current approach “will not work.” Since then, Kent has come under scrutiny. US media reports indicate that the FBI is gathering information related to him.

Media outlets such as The New York Times, Semaphore, and CBS have reported on this issue. According to these reports, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating an alleged leak of “classified information.”

Semaphore was the first to report on this investigation, which seeks to determine whether Kent shared sensitive national security information with unauthorized individuals. Officials are trying to ascertain the scope of the alleged leak and its potential impact. The outlet cited four individuals with direct knowledge of the investigation, one of whom stated that this inquiry has been ongoing for months.

In an interview with political activist and commentator Tucker Carlson, Kent expressed that the US goal is unclear. He noted that the US is avoiding the issue of “regime change” in Iran, while Israel is openly pursuing this agenda. Kent stated that Israel aims to completely dismantle the current government but lacks a clear plan for what would follow.

Kent also mentioned that he decided to resign when he felt his concerns were being ignored. He stated, “I cannot in good conscience be part of this path.”

Kent has a long military and intelligence career. As a Green Beret, he was deployed to combat zones 11 times and later worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). His personal life has also faced tragedy; his wife, a cryptologist in the US Navy, was killed in a suicide attack in Syria in 2019, leaving behind their two young sons.

Kent was the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, where he worked under Tulsi Gabbard’s oversight. Gabbard recently remarked that determining whether Iran poses a threat to the US is entirely up to President Donald Trump.

Gabbard, a former Congress member from Hawaii, has previously criticized discussions of military action against Iran. However, her current stance on the recent attacks remains unclear.

Meanwhile, the White House has taken a firm stance on Kent’s resignation. President Trump labeled him as “weak on security” and asserted that Iran poses “a significant threat.” He also suggested that those who do not recognize this threat raise questions about their decision-making abilities.

This entire incident highlights the deepening strategic disagreements within the US regarding Iran—where a hard military stance exists alongside serious concerns about the consequences.
