Modi and King Abdullah II Express Concerns Over Tensions in West Asia

New Delhi, March 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and King Abdullah II of Jordan held a phone conversation on Thursday, marking their second discussion this month. Both leaders expressed their concerns regarding the evolving situation in West Asia. They emphasized the necessity of dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace, security, and stability in the region as soon as possible.

PM Modi extended his early Eid greetings to King Abdullah II and praised Jordan’s efforts in ensuring the safe return of stranded Indians in the area.

In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “I conveyed my early Eid wishes to my brother, King Abdullah II of Jordan. We expressed our concerns over the changing circumstances in West Asia and stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace, security, and stability in the region swiftly.”

He further remarked, “The attacks on energy facilities in West Asia are condemnable and could escalate tensions that must be avoided. India and Jordan believe in the uninterrupted movement of energy and other products. I sincerely appreciate Jordan’s efforts in ensuring the safe return of stranded Indians in the region.”

This conversation took place amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia, which escalated following US-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, resulting in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military officials. In retaliation, Iran targeted US-Israeli bases and allied forces in West Asia with drone and missile strikes. The two leaders had also spoken on March 2.

In recent days, PM Modi has been in continuous contact with leaders from Malaysia, Oman, France, Kuwait, the UAE, Israel, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar. Between Wednesday and Thursday alone, he engaged with five prominent leaders, all of whom agreed on the importance of continuing dialogue and diplomacy to address the current crisis.
