
Mumbai, 12 December: Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil passed away on Friday morning. He died at the age of 90 at his residence ‘Devvar’ in Latur. Patil had been seriously ill for several days and was under home treatment for a long time.
Shivraj Patil was among the prominent leaders of Indian politics who held many important positions during his long public career. He served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and held various Union ministerial portfolios. The Congress party expressed deep sorrow over his demise. Senior party leaders and workers paid respectful tributes and conveyed condolences to his family.
Hailing from the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, Shivraj Patil Chakurkar was twice a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1973 to 1980. During this period, he also served as Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly. In 1980, he was elected to the Seventh Lok Sabha. Subsequently, he won six consecutive Lok Sabha elections in 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, and 1999. He held several Union Minister positions and also served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. His winning streak ended in 2004 when he lost to BJP candidate Rupatai Patil Nilangekar.
His contribution to national politics was significant. He was considered one of the trusted faces of the Congress party. Leaders across political parties often appreciated his calm nature and balanced approach. Shivraj Patil held a Science degree from Osmania University and studied Law at Mumbai University.
In 2004, he was appointed as the Union Home Minister, but he resigned from the post in 2008 taking moral responsibility for the Mumbai attacks. His resignation was seen as an example of political dignity and accountability at that time.
In recent months, Shivraj Patil had been battling a serious illness. His health gradually deteriorated, and he was kept under medical supervision at home instead of the hospital. On Friday morning, his condition suddenly worsened and he breathed his last.
