Former AAP Councillor Tahir Hussain Found Guilty in Delhi Riots Case, Co-Accused Acquitted

New Delhi, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : A Delhi court has convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain for inciting riots linked to the violence that erupted in February 2020. The ruling came on Saturday, with the court acquitting seven other co-accused individuals of all charges.

The decision was made by Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh at the Karkardooma Court. It pertains to an incident in the Dayalpur area of Northeast Delhi, where a shop was looted and set ablaze on February 24, 2020. The court found Hussain guilty of helping to incite the riot, while he was cleared of other charges.

The case originated from a complaint by a local shopkeeper, who alleged that his store was vandalized and set on fire, resulting in the theft of goods worth between 17 to 18 lakh rupees and property damage estimated at around 10 lakh rupees.

The police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Hussain and others under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with a deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 427 (mischief causing damage), 436 (using fire or explosive substances to destroy property), and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

This marks the second time Hussain has been convicted in connection with the February 2020 riots. Previously, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma. In that case, Hussain, along with co-accused Javed, Anas, Nazim, and Qasim, was found guilty, while six others were acquitted.

Hussain has challenged both his conviction and life sentence in the Delhi High Court. In September, the High Court issued notice to the Delhi police regarding his appeal and scheduled a hearing for December 2, alongside related appeals from other convicted individuals.

The communal violence in Northeast Delhi in February 2020 resulted in the deaths of 53 people, with many others injured and significant property damage reported.
