Gopalganj, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : Floodwaters from the Gandak River have rapidly spread across several villages in Gopalganj district, Bihar, following a rise in water levels and the breaching of embankments. Areas including Bansghat Masuriyan, Sheetalpur, Khomharipur, and Deepu-Pakri are now submerged, affecting homes and roadways.
The flooding has severely disrupted daily life, leaving many families struggling to secure food, shelter, and essential supplies. Bansghat Masuriyan is reported to be among the worst-hit areas. Residents described how the water surged unexpectedly during the night after the embankment broke, flooding homes before they could gather their belongings. Many families managed to evacuate with children and elderly relatives, but not before losing vital possessions. Malti Devi, a flood-affected resident, lamented the loss of grains, clothes, and children’s books. She and others are now facing significant challenges regarding housing and food.
The flood has not only damaged daily essentials but also devastated long-accumulated household items. Educational institutions in the affected areas have also been impacted, with floodwaters entering several schools and disrupting classes. The accumulation of water in school premises has made it difficult for students and teachers to access their facilities. Additionally, crops including sugarcane, maize, and rice have suffered damage due to flooding in the fields.
Residents are urging the district administration to expedite the delivery of relief supplies and increase the number of boats to help transport families to safety. The administration has stated that relief and rescue operations are underway at full scale in the affected areas. Officials, including Additional Collector Rajeshwari Pandey and Sub-Divisional Officer Dr. Prerna Singh, are actively monitoring the situation.
Community kitchens are operational at five locations, providing regular meals to those in need at Ram Pur Tengrahi, Jagiritola’s Manguraha Middle School, Mehendiya Hira Pakad, and Rajwahi. Medical and veterinary camps have also been established to provide health checks, medications, and animal care.
The rescue operation employs 14 boats from the government’s SDRF to transport individuals to safety and distribute essential relief supplies. The administration has issued directives for 24-hour vigilance in the affected areas and has deployed additional officials to assist in the efforts. Families who have lost their homes and belongings are now looking to the administration for timely relief and financial support.
