New Delhi, April 14: FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed his condolences following the tragic death of Dominic Frimpong, a player for Berekum Chelsea FC. The incident reportedly occurred after a match in the Ghana Premier League, where Berekum Chelsea faced former champions FC SmartTecs 1996.
The 20-year-old footballer’s life was cut short when the Berekum Chelsea FC team bus was attacked while returning from the match.
Infantino took to his Instagram account to share his sorrow, stating, “I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic passing of Dominic Frimpong from Berekum Chelsea Football Club. This incident occurred as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match when their bus was attacked. On behalf of the global football community and everyone at FIFA, we extend our condolences to his family, friends, all members of Berekum Chelsea FC, and everyone who knew him.”
While returning from Samrebow to Berekum, the team bus was ambushed by a group of armed robbers. The attackers blocked the road to prevent the bus from moving forward. According to the club, masked assailants armed with guns and assault rifles launched their attack as the driver attempted to reverse the bus. Players and staff members hid in nearby bushes to escape. Unfortunately, Frimpong was severely injured and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Patrice Motsepe, President of the African Football Confederation (CAF), also expressed his condolences regarding Frimpong’s death. In an official letter addressed to Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association, Motsepe conveyed his deep sorrow over the loss. He stated, “I was extremely saddened to learn that armed robbers attacked the Berekum Chelsea bus. The bus was returning from a Ghana Premier League match, and this attack claimed the life of 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong. Please convey my deepest sympathies on behalf of myself and CAF to Dominic Frimpong’s family, friends, teammates, and the Ghana Football Association.”
As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack continue, the football association remains in constant contact with the club and relevant authorities. Officials are urged to take all necessary steps to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
