Bengaluru, April 14: Former Chief Minister and MP Basavaraj Bommai has called on all political parties to set aside their differences and support the Women’s Reservation Bill. He also claimed that discontent is growing among minority communities against the Congress party.
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Bommai urged all parties to come together for the sake of India’s democratic future and back the Women’s Reservation Bill.
He noted that a special session of the Lok Sabha is approaching and expressed his satisfaction that Parliament is set to engage in a historic and revolutionary discussion on women’s reservation and delimitation. He highlighted that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had made provisions for women through the Hindu Code Bill.
Bommai stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi shares a similar vision. He also mentioned that former Congress President Sonia Gandhi had supported such initiatives. The Congress-led UPA government had introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill (108th Amendment Bill) in 2008, which was passed in the Rajya Sabha in 2010.
He emphasized that granting reservation to women is a shared aspiration and appealed to opposition parties to support this bill.
When questioned about cases filed against students protesting for government jobs, Bommai remarked that demonstrations have been ongoing for the past year and are now intensifying. He accused the Karnataka government of betraying the youth, stating that both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister had assured a notification would be issued within a month, which has not materialized.
He alleged that the government is not allowing peaceful protests, labeling it “anti-constitutional.” He warned that although police actions may suppress demonstrations for now, there will be a heavy price to pay in the future.
Regarding issues related to minority leaders within the state Congress, he indicated that it is not just a leadership issue but a sign of widespread discontent among minority communities. He claimed that communities that were once considered Congress’s vote bank are now expressing dissatisfaction.
He also noted that Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are losing faith in Congress and may strongly oppose the party in the future.
Referring to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, he pointed out that despite governing under the AHINDA banner, many communities now feel neglected.
On reports of Congress legislators traveling to Delhi, he stated that this indicates the Chief Minister has lost control over his ministers and legislators. Despite Siddaramaiah being an experienced leader, he faces dissent within his own faction, with legislators acting independently. There are also speculations that the Chief Minister may be behind these events.
