FIFA Addresses VAR Controversy During Switzerland vs. Qatar Match

Santa Clara, June 14: The VAR (Video Assistant Referee) controversy during the FIFA World Cup 2026 match between Switzerland and Qatar has sparked significant discussion. FIFA has released an official statement clarifying that a minor technical glitch prevented the 3D offside animation from being displayed on television. However, they emphasized that this did not affect the VAR process or the referee’s decision.

The incident occurred in the 14th minute when Qatar’s goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Switzerland’s player Remo Freuler, resulting in a penalty kick for Switzerland. While video replays suggested that Freuler might have been offside before the foul, the VAR reviewed the play and upheld the penalty decision.

Many viewers and experts, upon reviewing the replay, felt that Freuler could have been in an offside position before the foul. Typically, in such cases, a semi-automated offside technology 3D animation is displayed on TV to help viewers understand the decision. However, this graphic was absent during the broadcast.

This absence led to a flurry of questions on social media, with several football analysts criticizing FIFA. Former England footballer and prominent TV analyst Gary Neville expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that the controversial decision should have been publicly displayed to maintain transparency. Amid the growing controversy, FIFA clarified, “A minor technical issue prevented the onside animation graphic from being generated before the penalty awarded to Switzerland in the 14th minute. This issue was quickly resolved. The workflow of VAR was not affected, and the normal procedure was followed to check the decisions made on the field.”

FIFA Media stated in a public release, “The lines used by VAR to check the positions of the relevant players showed that, at no point before the penalty decision, was the attacking player in an offside position.” In this match, Qatar successfully earned their first point on foreign soil, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.
