Budapest, August 1 (H.S.) – Four-time Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen has put an end to speculations about joining Mercedes next season. On Thursday, ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Verstappen made it clear that he will continue racing with the Red Bull team next year as well.

He told reporters, “I think it’s time to stop the rumours now. For me, it was always clear that I would stay here. Within the team, we’ve constantly been discussing the car’s performance. When you are about to leave a team, such discussions stop. But I never did that.”

Major Regulation Change from Next Year

It is noteworthy that from next year, Formula One will see a major change in engine regulations. While Mercedes is expected to lead in this new era, Red Bull is working on its own new power unit, which is now separate from Honda.

Although Verstappen’s contract includes break clauses, they have not been exercised. With two wins in 13 races this season, he currently stands third at mid-season. His contract with Red Bull runs until 2028.

Horner’s Exit Seen as Strategy to Retain Verstappen

The recent dismissal of Red Bull team boss Christian Horner is also being viewed as part of the strategy to retain Verstappen in the team.

Verstappen said, “Some people just enjoy creating drama, but for me, it was always clear.”

Mercedes Focused on Current Line-up

Meanwhile, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff recently indicated that his priority is to retain the current driver line-up—George Russell and Italian driver Kimi Antonelli.

George Russell also said separately, “There’s no doubt I’ll be racing for Mercedes next year. But the contract will be signed only after the August break.”

Russell, who has been under Mercedes management since the age of 16, said that both he and Wolff are currently focused on improving the team’s performance, not on the contract.

He said, “Right now, there’s no urgency for the contract between me and Mercedes.”
