Muscat, August 1: Tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate, with increased military activity in the skies and seas. On Saturday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a significant explosion approximately 21 nautical miles (about 39 kilometers) northeast of Oman’s coast.
Following the incident, an alert was issued, and investigations commenced in the area. According to UKMTO, the explosion occurred near Khasab, with the crew reporting a loud blast and a large plume of water rising near the vessel.
Currently, there are no reports of damage to the ship. UKMTO stated that officials are investigating the matter and have advised vessels in the vicinity to navigate cautiously and report any suspicious activities.
Earlier, UKMTO indicated that the explosion had damaged the engine room, rendering the ship “out of control,” making navigation or course changes difficult. The Coast Guard Force has been informed. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or environmental damage, but other vessels in the area have been urged to proceed with caution and report any suspicious activities.
In a related development, Houthi rebels claimed they forced eight Saudi tankers to change their course in the Red Sea. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the Yemeni group is continuing its campaign against Saudi adversaries, asserting that their forces will reach the enemy’s vessels wherever possible.
The Houthis announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia on July 20 and recently dismissed reports suggesting they would impose fees on commercial ships passing through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
