Chandigarh, April 1: A powerful explosion occurred outside the BJP office in Sector 37, Chandigarh, on Wednesday. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur, there are suspicions that crude material was involved in the blast.
The explosion sent shockwaves through the area, with reports indicating that the sound was heard from a considerable distance, instilling fear among local residents and passersby.
SSP Kaur informed the media that the police received reports of a loud explosion around 5 PM. “My team and I arrived at the scene immediately. It appears that some crude material may have been thrown here. Teams from the NIA and FSL have also arrived to investigate,” she stated.
Following the incident, police, fire brigade personnel, and senior officials rushed to the site. The area was cordoned off, and an investigation commenced to determine the cause and nature of the explosion. CCTV footage from nearby areas is also being reviewed to identify any suspicious activities before or after the incident.
According to police, several vehicles parked outside the BJP office were damaged due to the explosion. Images show police officers on-site alongside damaged scooters and cars. Although the blast was of low intensity, it created an atmosphere of concern in the vicinity.
BJP leader and Chandigarh Mayor’s brother, Vineet Joshi, told the media that some vehicles were damaged. He reported that police were notified after hearing the explosion.
In response, Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar stated that such attempts are being made to disrupt communal harmony in the state. He remarked, “Previously, there were continuous grenade attacks on police checkpoints in Punjab. Recently, the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in Hoshiarpur was damaged, and today there was an attack on the BJP state office in Chandigarh. This series of incidents reflects attempts to undermine communal harmony in the state.”
Jakhar added, “Moreover, the government of this border state has failed to prevent these attacks. As a result, the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab is now evident in Chandigarh as well. No matter how hard separatist forces try, they will not be able to break Punjab’s communal unity.”
In light of the incident, police have heightened vigilance in Chandigarh and increased patrols in sensitive areas. Sources suggest that the incident may have been carried out by individuals on motorcycles, although this has not been officially confirmed.
