Mumbai, February 11: A special court in Satara, Maharashtra, has convicted Swapnil Jadhav, a Social Security Officer (SSO) of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), for bribery. He has been sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹50,000.

The court found Jadhav guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act based on evidence and witness statements presented during the trial.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case on March 28, 2016, following a written complaint. The complaint alleged that Jadhav demanded a bribe of ₹30,000 to avoid imposing a penalty of ₹3 lakh on the complainant’s firm for allegedly violating hiring regulations concerning more than ten employees. During negotiations, he agreed to accept ₹25,000.

On the same day, the CBI set up a sting operation and caught Jadhav red-handed accepting the bribe from the complainant in the presence of an accomplice. Both individuals were promptly arrested. After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Swapnil Jadhav and his accomplice, Abhijit Jadhav, on June 28, 2016.

Following the trial, the court convicted Swapnil Jadhav while acquitting Abhijit Jadhav due to lack of evidence. This ruling marks a significant milestone in the legal proceedings of the case.
