The term “Uthita” comes from Sanskrit, meaning “extended” or “stretched.” It is used to describe yoga poses that involve stretching or extending the body.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Uthita Padmasana is a powerful asana that enhances balance, concentration, and physical-mental capabilities. This pose particularly strengthens the arms, shoulders, wrists, and core muscles. It involves lifting the entire body off the ground while seated in the Padmasana position.
Regular practice of this asana improves blood circulation in the chest, shoulders, and arms, boosts metabolism, and facilitates the smooth flow of prana (life energy) in the body. It is considered an effective way to awaken inner strength for yoga practitioners. Uthita Padmasana is also highly beneficial for students, as it enhances concentration, which is essential for any task.
The benefits of Uthita Padmasana are manifold. To perform it, begin by sitting comfortably in the Padmasana (lotus position). Place both palms firmly on the ground beside your body. As you inhale, shift your weight onto your hands and slowly lift your hips and entire body off the ground. Keep your neck and head straight and gaze forward, according to your ability. Then, exhale and gently lower your body back to the ground.
Avoid this asana if you have severe injuries to your knees or ankles, or if you suffer from arthritis. Beginners should not force themselves; instead, practice Ardha Padmasana or Butterfly Pose first.
