Yoga offers an effective solution that strengthens the body and calms the mind. One of the essential poses is the Purvottanasana, or the Upward Plank Pose.
Regular practice of this pose enhances flexibility and alleviates numerous health problems. It is particularly beneficial for those with desk jobs.
The name Purvottanasana derives from two Sanskrit words: “Purva,” meaning the front part of the body, and “Uttana,” meaning stretched. This pose not only improves physical health but also helps in reducing stress.
Spending just 10-15 minutes practicing yoga can lead to long-term fitness benefits. Purvottanasana is valuable for both physical and mental well-being.
The Ministry of AYUSH recognizes it as a significant yoga pose. According to them, this asana balances the body’s weight on the hands and feet, primarily strengthening the muscles of the arms, wrists, back, thighs, and shoulders. It energizes the body, enhances spinal flexibility, and improves abdominal muscle tone.
Practicing Purvottanasana creates pressure in the abdomen, which strengthens the abdominal muscles and reduces belly fat. Additionally, it increases overall body flexibility, promoting energy flow.
To perform this pose, lie on your back with your legs straight and arms at your sides. Gradually bring your hands closer to your shoulders, keeping your palms on the ground. Inhale and push through your hands and feet to lift your body upwards, aiming to form a bridge shape. Tilt your head back and lift your chest. Hold this position for 15 to 30 seconds while breathing normally. Then, slowly lower your body back down and relax.
Avoid this pose if you have neck or wrist injuries, and consider practicing under the guidance of a yoga instructor initially.
