New Delhi, 9 December. England suffered a major blow in the Ashes series as fast bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out. Matthew Fisher has been called up to replace him in the team.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Tuesday, “Mark Wood has been ruled out of the Ashes series due to injury. He will return home to begin rehabilitation and recovery. Wood will work closely with the ECB medical team during his recovery. Matthew Fisher has been added to the squad in his place.”
Wood had made a comeback during the Ashes first Test in Perth after getting injured during the Champions Trophy. However, he suffered a knee problem again in the same Test and managed to bowl only 11 overs. He missed the second Test in Brisbane and was expected to return for the matches in Adelaide or Melbourne, but now he has been ruled out of the entire series.
Mark Wood’s career has been hampered by injuries. He has frequently been sidelined for long periods due to fitness issues. The 35-year-old has admitted that his body is not the same as before, and age is taking a toll. Bowling at speeds of 145 km/h has become challenging for him.
If Wood is unable to recover and be fit for the T20 World Cup 2026, his return to international cricket will be very difficult.
Matthew Fisher, who has been brought into the team, has played only one Test for England so far. The 28-year-old played his only Test against the West Indies in Bridgetown in 2022, where he took one wicket.
It is also worth noting that Australia’s fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the Ashes series.
