England Eliminates Defending Champions New Zealand in Womens T20 World Cup

London, June 28: In a stunning display, England defeated New Zealand by 9 wickets in the 28th match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. This loss at The Oval marks the end of the tournament for the defending champions, New Zealand, who exit at the group stage.

Chasing a target of 164 runs set by New Zealand, England achieved the goal with ease, losing only one wicket in 17.2 overs. England’s innings did not start well, with Amy Jones continuing her poor form, scoring just 17 runs before being dismissed. However, Danny Wyatt and Sophie Dunkley took charge, leaving no chance for the Kiwi team to recover.

The duo formed an unbroken partnership of 128 runs for the second wicket off 80 balls, leading England to a resounding victory. Wyatt maintained her excellent form, scoring an unbeaten 89 runs off just 53 balls, which included 15 fours and one six. Dunkley also contributed significantly, remaining not out on 49 runs from 38 balls, hitting 9 fours. The only wicket for New Zealand fell to Nancy Patel.

Earlier, New Zealand managed to score 163 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs. Captain Amelia Kerr and Isabella Gaze provided a solid start, adding 70 runs for the first wicket in 9.6 overs. Gaze’s innings was slow, as she scored 28 runs off 27 balls before getting out. Kerr, on the other hand, scored 42 runs off 34 balls, hitting 6 fours. Sophie Devine added 30 runs off 14 balls, including one four and three sixes.

Izzy Sharp failed to make an impact, returning to the pavilion without scoring. Brock Holiday contributed 20 runs off 17 balls, while Maddy Green remained not out with 17 runs. Suzie Bates scored 19 runs off 13 balls before being run out. In bowling, England’s Danny Gibson took the most wickets, claiming 2 for 30 runs, while Freya Kemp and Lauren Bell each took one wicket.
