England Defeats India 2-0 in FIH Hockey World Cup Final

Hyderabad, March 15: The Indian women’s hockey team finished second in the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 qualifiers. In the final match held at the GMC Balayogi Hockey Ground in Hyderabad, India faced a 0-2 defeat against England. Grace Balsdon (13th minute) and Elizabeth Neal (43rd minute) scored for England.

India started the match aggressively, with Navneet Kaur earning a penalty corner within the first two minutes. However, her drag flick was saved by the English goalkeeper. The host team displayed remarkable discipline, maintaining a strong defense while attempting to penetrate the opponent’s territory.

Towards the end of the first quarter, England solidified their grip on the match, earning a penalty corner with just two minutes remaining. Grace Balsdon capitalized on this opportunity, scoring with a drag flick and marking her fifth goal from a penalty corner in the tournament, giving England a 1-0 lead.

The second quarter mirrored the first, with both teams limiting each other’s chances. Despite entering the circle eight times in the first half, India struggled to breach the English defense. England managed to maintain their one-goal lead until halftime.

After taking the lead, England skillfully passed the ball and controlled the match. India had a few chances to apply pressure, but the visiting team’s defense held firm. Eventually, Elizabeth Neal doubled their lead in the 43rd minute. Her shot deflected off a Indian defender, fooling goalkeeper Bishu Devi and finding the back of the net. By the end of the third quarter, England led 2-0. The Indian team made every effort to stage a comeback, but they failed to score.
